The Most Forgotten About And Dominant Video Game Athlete Ever
So this topic came up briefly right at the beginning of this week’s Redline Radio. All of the usual suspects were named. Bo Jackson in Tecmo Bowl, Jeremy Roenick in NHL 94, Michael Vick in Madden 2001. All super dominant players. The type of guy that you’d roll your eyes if your buddies picked a team with one of them. Whenever this discussion comes up I always forget my #1 video game gangster. Slips my mind even though he was more recent, and for me more frequent, than any of the other three…Alan Fookin Shearer in FIFA 2003-2005
I wasn’t the best FIFA player. I couldn’t do any of the fancy controls or dangle people and because I loved smoking people with slide tackles I was frequently a man or two down by the end of the game, but if you give me Alan Shearer with the ball at the edge of the box then that’s basically an automatic goal. The guy was an absolute beast and because Newcastle wasn’t as strong as Manchester United, Chelsea, and Arsenal you could play with Shearer guilt free and just absolutely BOMB goals from anywhere. The most underrated video game god ever. Nobody ever brings him up, but he was the equalizer for people who sucked at FIFA.
And…if you were going to do a season, just go ahead and make sure you get Santiago Munez. The perfect 10 to play with Shearer. That’s how you bring home trophies in FIFA.
Honorable Mention: Tim Wakefield in MVP Baseball 2005. Maybe it was just me, but I couldn’t hit him. Every pitch out of his hand looked like a strike so you never actually needed to throw a strike. Guys would just swing at everything.
